Introduction
Estuaries are special places where rivers meet the sea. Each one is unique, ranging from small lagoons to extensive wetland harbour systems.New Zealand has more than 300 estuaries, which range from small lagoons to extensive wetland harbour systems. Some are always open to the sea, but others are only inundated with seawater when sandbars are broken up in storms.
